Makkum, Workum, Koudum, Hindeloopen
Makkum was called 'the gateway to the Zuiderzee' in the Middle Ages. Thanks to the locks, the place managed to develop into an important trade center, with wood, oil and paper mills, brickyards, shell lime kilns that supplied high-quality masonry lime, and of course tile bakeries. . Because the pottery from Makkum became world famous. Prosperity declined in the nineteenth century due to the silting up of the Zuiderzee, but especially the monumental merchant houses in the harbor area still show the prosperity of old Makkum. Workum has 'only' had city rights since 1399, making it the youngest of the Frisian Eleven Cities. Workum consists of two parts, separated by the Diepe Dolte. The city has three museums, of which the Jopie Huisman Museum is the most famous. Koudum is located on a moraine from the ice age (approx. 10 meters above NAP). That is probably also where the name comes from: Col (high point) Widum (in the forest). Although Hindeloopen traditionally had no harbor but was only an anchorage for ships, the town has nevertheless been able to benefit from trade. Hindelooper skippers mainly traded with Baltic countries. The captain's houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries still show how prosperous Hindeloopen was at that time. This wealth is also apparent from Hindelooper painting: almost everything was painted in the characteristic colors white, green, red and blue. The paintings were richly detailed.

Workum, Koudum, Stavoren
Despite the fact that Bolsward is not located directly on the Zuiderzee, the city owes its prosperity to shipping. Thanks to the good connections, trade flourished and Bolsward was able to join the Hanseatic League in 1412. Whoever walks through the city now sees the prosperity of that time. Stavoren was of course very conveniently located on the Zuiderzee. An excellent breeding ground for the growth of shipping and trade, Stavoren was able to join the Hanseatic League as early as 1385. Of course everyone who has read the story about the Lady of Stavoren knows what happened to the city... But the traces of the Hanse era can also be found in Stavoren, although there are not many buildings left. Stavoren has often been flooded and that has caused great damage. That is how the blockhouse from 1522 disappeared. Now a new replica of the blockhouse is being built in Stavoren.
